I love quotes.  Perhaps you’ve heard the following by William Benton:

“The rewards in business go to the man who does something with an idea.”

There are four facets about this quote that I love.  Let me break it down:

  1. It speaks to success.  “The rewards in business…”  Rewards can take many forms.  It’s natural to focus on financial rewards – money – but I also think about accomplishment and the satisfaction of a job well done.
  1. It focuses on productivity.  “The rewards in business…”  What business are you in?  Is it commercial enterprise?  Philanthropic engagement (a not-for-profit entity)?  Perhaps community involvement via your school, church or civic club?  Maybe you, just like me, actively pursue the business of life!
  1. It issues a call to action.  “…the man who does something…”  Seth Godin, in his bestselling book, Poke the Box, shoves readers out of their comfort zone of inertia by hammering home the value of initiative.  Yes, doing something – action – is a precious and rare commodity.
  1. It values inspiration.  “…does something with an idea.”  We all have ideas.  We all have good ideas.  But not all of our ideas are good.  Or bad.  Determining the difference is where the richness of life is found.

“The rewards in business go to the man who does something with an idea.”

I have lots of ideas.  Some of them are good.  Most are not.  But all too often I let good ideas go unidentified and undeveloped.  That’s another way of saying the ideas are wasted.  An embarrassing example of poor stewardship on my part.

What’s your story?  In small nonprofits there are lots of needs . . . and lots of ideas for addressing those needs.  Will you commit to taking action on just one idea today?

Here’s another quote to consider:  “You become successful the moment you start moving toward a worthwhile goal.”  Unfortunately the source of this quote is unknown to me.  But its truth has become undeniable.  Are you ready to start moving toward your biggest goal?  I hope so.

“The rewards in business go to the man who does something with an idea.”

I am doggedly determined to do something with more of my ideas.  Will you join me?
